Our team of medico-legal experts

Our team of experts is led by Dr Angela Simcox. Each have more than 20 years’ clinical experience and between us have provided expert representation in hundreds of civil injury cases in the UK, Ireland and beyond.

We are specialists in children’s development, mental health and neuropsychology and provide expert opinion on the impact of adverse events and catastrophic injuries. Our team have particular expertise in birth injuries, traumatic brain injury, developmental trauma, neuro-oncology and sensory impairments.

We work together in a way that ensures you get the best possible expert for each case, whilst also sharing our learning and best practice to keep the whole team up-to-date and meeting the highest standards in medical negligence and personal injury reporting. In addition to their extensive clinical experience and qualifications, all our experts have additional training in civil litigation.

CONSULTANT PAEDIATRIC NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST

Dr Angela Simcox

I am a Consultant Paediatric Clinical Neuropsychologist with 20 years’ experience. I am registered with the British Psychological Society and Health and Care Professions Council. I have been on the Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists since 2009 following training as a paediatric specialist.

I developed my career working in regional paediatric neuropsychology centres at Leeds General Infirmary; King’s College Hospital, London; and James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough; and community neurodisability services in the North. I set up a clinic in Cambodia in 2010. I went on to be a clinical lead in paediatric neuropsychology services at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College Hospital in London, where I lead neuropsychology teams in metabolic medicine, neurodisability, neuro-oncology and general neurology clinics. These roles included providing neuropsychology input to national and international clinical trials. Alongside, these roles, I have been director of Indigo Neuropsychology paediatric neurorehabilitation service since 2013.

I have worked as an expert witness since 2006, completed the Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate, and attend annual legal updates. I see around 40 clinical negligence and personal injury cases per year. I specialise in birth injuries, neuro-oncology, TBI, and other types of acquired brain injury in childhood.

I have been a board member of the British Psychological Society Faculty of Paediatric Neuropsychology since 2016; Division of Neuropsychology Policy Unit since 2023; and Expert Witness Advisory Group since 2024. I am involved in training and supervision of paediatric neuropsychologists, including acting as an accreditation examiner.

SENIOR PAEDIATRIC NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST

Dr Sarah Howley

I am a Clinical Psychologist and Paediatric Neuropsychologist with 10 years’ experience working for the NHS in the UK, and more recently, for organisations in Ireland providing services to both the HSE and Tusla.  

Prior to training as a clinical psychologist, I completed a research PhD in developmental neuropsychology and child mental health. This was part of a national project by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Trinity College Dublin investigating neuropsychological functioning and mental health in children with a neurogenetic condition.

I specialise in complex assessment of children with neurodevelopmental conditions, acquired brain injuries or other physical health conditions. I also work extensively with children in care who present with attachment and trauma-related difficulties and foetal exposure to drugs or alcohol.

I have worked as part of the multidisciplinary team in cases of birth injury and road traffic accidents in the UK for many years. I can accept cases in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

CONSULTANT CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Dr Tracey Smith

I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with more than 20 years of experience working with children and their families, and leading and developing services to provide them with high quality, evidence-based psychological care. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist and with the British Psychological Society as a Chartered Psychologist.

Throughout my career my work has focused on child and adolescent mental health, attachment, trauma and adjustment, and neurodevelopment/neurodisability. I have had a number of clinical lead roles across Yorkshire including for neurodevelopmental assessment clinics and CAMHS, and the regional arm of a national trauma-informed programme in children’s secure and forensic services. I was co-chair of the British Psychological Society Expert by Experience Strategy Group for 4 years. I was Senior Clinical Tutor at the University of Leeds for 12 years, training clinical psychologists.

I am currently Chief Psychological Professions Officer and Clinical Lead for Trauma Informed Care leading a large team of psychological professionals across a range of specialties for South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. I am also Clinical Lead for Indigo Neuropsychology providing rehabilitation for children and support for their families following catastrophic injury. I am a visiting lecturer at Leeds Institute of Health Sciences and continue to supervise doctoral research.

I have acted as an expert witness in cases of psychological trauma and adjustment, and resulting treatment and care needs since 2023. I provide complex assessment following catastrophic injury, illness, loss of a parent or other traumatic events. I provide assessments of neurodevelopmental difficulties and long-term prognosis and needs. I have completed Bond Solon training and I attend regular legal updates.
